VASAD RAVINES- The Outdoor Lab

This is a nature education centre developed by us to impart knowledge about environment and the inter-relationships existing on this planet. This, ravines of River Mahi is rich in biodiversity and the children would be able to observe nilgai, jackal, hare and a variety of birds and reptiles. It is situated roughly 90 kms from Ahmedabad and 30 kms from Baroda.

Learning Possibilities:

Caring for our surroundings: This ANUBHAV camp would be an ideal initiation for children of class II to learn about caring for our own surroundings. After giving a brief idea about what are surroundings, the children can observe the given area and find out the various elements – trees, birds, rivers, streams, insects etc. Let the outdoor lab help them know that people produce lots of waste, the waste accumulated by us get in to the river through rain water and harm the living things in the water. Let them also begin to cultivate the habit of using dustbin even in a situation like a camp.

Water: We cannot imagine life without water. Plants, animals and human being all need water to survive. There are different sources of water – seas, lakes, rivers, ponds, wells, canals – and all these sources are inter connected. The concept of rain and water cycle can also be explained. The source of water in the campsite or the glass of water in the child’s hand can be connected to the water in the nearby river; pond and can ultimately lead to the concept of water cycle. Uses of water – drink, bathe, clean utensils, put off fire, wash clothes, grow plants, irrigate fields – can be discussed, performed and demonstrated. This can lead to discussion on minimizing of usage of water, misuse of water, pollution of water etc.

Food for health: Plants, animals and human being all need food. It is important to grow, keep alive, give energy and to remain healthy. Source of food – plants & animals, the connectivity between strict vegetarians and non-vegetarians, requirement of different food for different functions etc can be taken up.

Houses (Shelters): A house is a building, it is home for us, and it protects us from heat, cold, rain and storm. When it comes to other animals, it can be a shelter, but gives the same comfort and protection as the house of ours. During the ANUBHAV, children will definitely get chances to probe anthills, rodent (rat) burrows, beehive, bird’s nest etc.
