Anubhav

Anubhav for Class III

HINGOLGADH - The Outdoor Lab

Hingolgadh is the only protected area in India that is declared for Nature Education. Hingolgadh Nature Education Sanctuary is situated in Jasdan taluka of Rajkot district, roughly 180 km from Ahmedabad. The only declared sanctuary for nature education, this hilly terrain with natural scrub forest harbours nilgai, chinkara, jackal, hare and a variety of birds and reptiles. The Anubhav campsite is very close to the old castle, right inside the sanctuary with basic facilities like pucca toilets and shelters.

Learning Possibilities:

Knowing Myself - We all know that the child is an integral part of the environment; therefore, besides the knowledge of the self, the child must also know the ways to take care of her/himself. It is also necessary to provide opportunities for the physical and mental development of the child. It is equally important for a child to acquire social values and closely relate her/himself to other beings and be sensitive towards them.

The one night two-day camp at Hingolgadh is planned with these objectives in mind and this would be the beginning of a series of similar programmes. By the end of this ANUBHAV, we expect the child to understand the significance of a routine in daily life and physical excursion for good health.

We need them to live: Children will be made aware that the food they eat daily is prepared from some of the things like vegetables, pulses, cereals, fruits, oil, milk and water. Also there would be realization that food habits change from person to person like some of us eat chapattis made of wheat flour, while some of us eat rice, some of us eat both chapattis and rice. All of us eat vegetables and fruits also. They protect us from diseases. An exercise would be given to the students to note down the sources of the food items they had. Ideally, they would also be taken to the nearly field for the hands on experience.

The journey of water: How do we get water in the tap can be the first question, this can be followed up by questions like what will happen if the clouds are not formed, if the sun rays do not reach the sea and if there is no rain.  The campsite being on a hill top and the season selected being monsoon, the children will experience the humidity, cloud formation and most probably a rain.

Our neighbourhood: Hingolgadh would be the first night experience for the children; they would certainly understand the need for a house/shelter, types of houses and the importance of keeping the house clean. They would also be introduced to working together in team so as to understand the value of working in a team.

They will also be introduced to the night sky. This would be a smaller session, as we do not expect the children to show interest in knowing about the constellations etc at this age. A general idea of the universe and why we see stars only during the night etc can be discussed.
